Why it matters

The COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed attention to the critical role of face masks in protecting both healthcare workers and the patients they serve. While public use has declined, masks remain a daily reality across healthcare, elder care, and specialized education environments.

What also became clear is that traditional masks are not always patient-friendly. By obscuring facial expressions, they can unintentionally create fear, confusion, or resistance—particularly among young children and cognitively impaired individuals, including those living with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

At its core, care is human. A sense of familiarity, reassurance, and trust is not separate from treatment—it is fundamental to it.

We believe protective equipment can do more. It can protect without distancing. It can support safety while preserving connection.

Our approach is intentionally designed to build on existing NIOSH-approved mask designs—enhancing rather than replacing them—making it easier to integrate, scale, and adopt across real-world care environments.
